I saw two Korean films I really liked at the International Buddhist Film Festival last month - "Beyond the Mountain" and "Festival"

Not being particularly knowledgeable about Korean Cinema, I was wondering if any of you would be willing to share your top 5 (or more) Korean Films to help me round out my education....

Just saw this absolutely beautiful movie...deals with Buddhist cycle of karma...Breathtaking cinematograhy of the Korean lake and surrounding forest, not to mention the changing seasons...goes with the changing human nature of the protagonist.

Please let me know what's worth watching!

I watched 말아톤 (Marathon?) a week or so ago, and I thought it sucked. It's about a guy with a disability (I think he's autistic) who runs to be somewhat normal in his life. I thought it was weak, compared to Oasis, which kind of addresses a similar topic with more poignancy and depth.

hey,glad to find this tribe.I am just sort of tuning into Korean cinema,really enjoy Kim Ki-duk's work.I just saw 3-Iron at the fest tonight and highly recommend it.He was there for a Q&A and seems like a thoughtful,congenial guy......Bad Guy is also a challenging but worthwhile watch

Just watched "A Bittersweet Life" (unsure about the the Korean title). It's pretty excellent, although I felt a few scenes/ideas were a little contrived. Good gangster movie all around.

아라한 장풍대작전

Sorry, I don't know what the English title for it is...

I just saw it recently; it's about a kid cop who gets taught the ancient art of 장풍 (wind from the hand?), among other energy manipulations by a tribe of elderly teachers, as well as a 7-11 girl his own age. It's comedy-action, and I thought it was pretty good. I like the hero/anti-hero in this movie because he's such a doofus, but also has good fighting skills.

Anybody else see it?

Hi Everyone,

I'm pretty new to Korean movies. I got into it when I watched My Sassy Girl, quickly realizing that there are MUCH better Korean movies available. I watched Windstruck, The Classic, My Boyfriend is Type B, Lover's Concerto, A Moment to Remember, My Mother's a Mermaid, etc etc.

My question is: what are some other really good Korean movies in that genre (melodrama and/or romance) that you'd recommend for me to watch. I really love Korean movies and am SO glad to have discovered them :)

For those of you who Netflix, does anyone else think it's ridiculous that they don't categorize Korean films, just as they do for Chinese and Japanese films? It makes it very tough to search for new Korean DVDs...

saw it opening weekend in the us,
really liked it,
liked the korean drive in it,
never give up kinda thing

but was wondering why some parts of korean cinema have to be sooo soap opera melodramatic.

i don't live in korea, but are koreans really that cheesy? i don't know any koreans that cheesy here in the us. cheesy - the whole shoe and ice cream part.

2 flicks worth checking out

Arahan, good mix of comedy and urban martial arts action. Interesting story about the power of chi taught to a young bumbling cop by the seven masters. Lots of swordplay and wirework, has a Matrix feel to it as well. 8/10

Fighter in the Wind, supposed to be based on the life of legendary Korean martial artist Choi Bae-dal. Story drags abit in parts but makes up for it during the action sequences. Filmed in high speed so visually nice to look at as well. 7/10

Any Dae Janggeum fans out there?

I totally love this series! This is the second Korean period drama that I've followed without subtitles. The first was Yeoin Cheonha which was worth watching for the catfight royale. However, DJG has more substance, with Pan-Asian themes of struggle, strife, perseverance, and eventually vindication. Not that the fact it has a gorgeous-looking cast doesn't help. Also love the folk song they play during the end credits. Makes me wanna sign up for a Korean lang course and book that movie tour of Korea!

Am also currently watching Moonyin Shidae (w/subtitles for a change).

Farienheit 911

I called Lions Gate Distribution and they told me that the new Michael Moore film will not be released in Korea (at least not right now). They continued to say that there are no plans to release it here as of now. That could change if people contact them requestring a release.

Also, does anyone know where I can get a copy of this? VHS or DVD, it doesn't matter to me.

I heard that Quentin Tarantino, the one of the main juries, worried about the decision becuase of the violent scene and controversial topic, while strongly supporting the film to win.

I hope this award will boost up the Korean cinema industry.

Hey, what is your all time favorite korean melodrama? in any format.

to the starry island really spoke to me. especially when the mother of the dead girl is sitting on the roof of her straw house crying and waving her daughter's dress in the air. love that scene. that was this movie right? who directed this master work? i need to get up on my korean new wave cinema. can anyone give a film theory / history / crit rundown of korean cinema today. it seems like los angeles is alwasy throwing some kind of korean cinema thing, so it must be exciting now.

Kang Jae (Choi Min Shik) is an old and outdated gangster who has no respect from his peers. Short on money, Kang Jae decides to take on the arranged marriage. Having nothing more than a picture of Kang Jae, Failan spends her days dreaming and wishing that Kang Jae would come to visit her. Failan often writes to Kang Jae in sorrow about how much she misses and thinks about him, but never has the nerve to give the letters to Kang Jae. Things take a turn when Kang Jae is asked by his boss to take the fall for a murder in exchange for some money. The only hope in his worthless life is the wife he never met."

A really stunning one, folks. Highly recommended to all!

i just recently joined netflix and noticed there are quite a few Korean films available. however, their descriptions are pretty generic and i thought i'd ask here if anyone had any recommendations of Korean films, especially films that transcend a genre. i've seen "Shiri" and was a bit disappointed though perhaps i'll give it another try. my tastes tend towards independent and foreign, and not a 'connect-the-dots' story or basic melodrama. i've heard that Im Won-Taek (?) is a master of the medium - anything else?

hello, i am korean, do you know any koreans?
what do you think of our personality? i think we are crazy mo fos but i love us!

what makes koreans so crazy????? historically we have many reasons, doubly colonized (chinese, japanese) and maybe even more. we are an insular people. we got royally f-ed in the los angeles riots. this hopefully awakened us to the need for community involvement. though many of us were down with the community too.

what i love most about a korean is that you can say any totally wacked out thing to them and they accept in, no judgment, and give you some feedback. thanks david!!!!!

i glanced through an article in last month's Giant Robot on the Korean director, Kim Ki-Duk. his films include "Crocodile" "Bad Guy" and "Spring Summer Fall Winter". GR compared him to Lynch, Miike, and Wong Kar-
Wai. Has anyone here seen any of his films? i have yet to see any of his films and was wondering if anybody here has. any thoughts?
